Yeah ! The golden years ! The choice is plethoric but bests aren't so numerous. I'm sorry to say what everybody say : King Crimson, Genesis, Yes, Pink Floyd, Supertramp, Jethro Tull, Camel, Caravan, ELP and VdGG are THE pionneers. By the time, Italy produced some of the best prog rock bands in the world. They were pionneers in their country : PFM, Banco, Latte e Miele, Le Orme are real masters. Germany was also involved in the movment. What we call Krautrock today is born in 1969 perhaps 1968. Amon Düül, Xhol Caravan, Can, Neu! grabbed their gold medal. Of course I have to say some words about France : Ange, Atoll, Gong, Magma, Religionnaire... well not this one :) They are all the 1st in their respective genre to express something with progressive rock.
